Overview

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a group of Gram-positive bacteria notable for its resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics. It is a human pathogen responsible for a range of infections, from mild skin conditions to severe diseases. Resistance arises through the mecA gene encoding an altered penicillin-binding protein (PBP2a) with low affinity for beta-lactams. MRSA is globally prevalent and associated with significant morbidity/mortality.
