Target
None
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase
01

Overview

Methionine--tRNA ligase, also known as methionyl-tRNA synthetase (MetRS), is an essential enzyme that catalyzes the attachment of the amino acid L-methionine to its corresponding tRNA (tRNAMet). This process, called aminoacylation or "charging" of tRNA, is a critical step in protein biosynthesis. The enzyme ensures that methionine is correctly incorporated at the start and within polypeptide chains during translation. MetRS plays a dual role in translation: charging initiator tRNAs for initiation and elongator tRNAs for methionine incorporation during elongation. During cellular stress, post-translational modifications can alter substrate specificity, potentially serving protective roles.
