Overview

Methionine biosynthesis refers to the cellular pathways that produce methionine, an essential sulfur-containing amino acid. While animals (including humans) cannot synthesize methionine and must obtain it from their diet, plants, fungi, and many microorganisms possess *de novo* biosynthetic pathways for methionine production. It's considered a good antimicrobial target because the enzymes involved are essential for microbial growth but absent in humans.
