Methionine gamma-lyase (MGL; EC 4.4.1.11) is a pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP)-dependent enzyme that catalyzes the degradation of sulfur-containing amino acids, primarily L-methionine, to produce methanethiol, ammonia, and 2-oxobutanoate. MGL is found in bacteria and plants but not in humans. It has therapeutic potential as an anticancer and antibacterial/antiparasitic agent.
