Beyond its canonical metabolic role, MRI1 also promotes cell invasion, particularly in melanoma, through protein-protein interaction pathways that are independent of its isomerase activity[1]. Elevated expression is linked to metastatic melanoma, raising possible value in cancer biology, and genetic mutations have been associated with vanishing white matter disease and other neurological syndromes[1]. The enzyme shows identical protein binding activity and contributes to cytoskeletal changes in response to RhoA pathway activation, supporting a dual role in metabolism and cytoskeletal regulation[1].
