Overview

Methyltransferase like 21A pseudogene 1 (METTL21AP1) is a segment of DNA in the human genome similar in sequence to the METTL21A gene but has lost its protein-coding function due to disabling mutations or sequence degeneration[3][4][5]. As a pseudogene, METTL21AP1 is generally considered nonfunctional at the protein level. It may be transcribed in some contexts, and, like other pseudogenes, has the theoretical potential to perform regulatory functions at the RNA level, such as influencing gene expression through RNA interference, acting as a microRNA decoy, or affecting mRNA stability[2]. However, no such specific regulatory functions or roles related to disease or therapy have been established for METTL21AP1 to date[4][3][5]. Pseudogenes like METTL21AP1 are mostly important in evolutionary biology and genomics studies, but are not considered canonical targets in drug discovery or therapeutic development.

Mechanism of action

None (As there is no known drug interaction, mechanism of action does not apply.)

03

Biological functions

Some pseudogenes may play regulatory roles at the RNA level, such as acting as microRNA decoys or producing noncoding RNAs that modulate gene expression, but specific function for METTL21AP1 is unknown or unsupported by current data
04

Disease associations

No established direct disease associations or roles for METTL21AP1. In general, pseudogenes can be deregulated in diseases like cancers, but a direct role for this specific pseudogene has not been described
05

Safety considerations

None specific. As a pseudogene, it does not encode a protein and is not considered in therapeutic safety assessments.
