Overview

MGC-803 is a human cell line that was originally established in 1980 and described as being derived from a patient with poorly differentiated gastric adenocarcinoma (Cellosaurus, CVCL_1411). It has been widely used in biomedical research to study the molecular mechanisms of gastric cancer progression, metastasis, and response to various pharmacological agents. However, MGC-803 is currently listed by the International Cell Line Authentication Committee (ICLAC) as a misidentified cell line (ICLAC, 2023). Genetic profiling and Short Tandem Repeat (STR) analysis have demonstrated that MGC-803 is contaminated with or has been entirely replaced by HeLa, a cervical adenocarcinoma cell line (Ye et al., 2015). Because it is a complex cellular system and not a specific protein, enzyme, or receptor, it does not function as a therapeutic target. Researchers are cautioned that data generated using MGC-803 may reflect the biology of cervical cancer rather than gastric cancer, potentially leading to misleading conclusions in oncology studies.
