MICAL2 antisense RNA 1 (MICAL2-AS1) is a long non-coding antisense RNA transcribed from the genomic region opposite to the MICAL2 gene. As an antisense RNA, it is involved in the regulation of gene expression, primarily modulating the transcript and function of its corresponding sense gene, MICAL2, which encodes an enzyme involved in actin cytoskeletal regulation and is implicated in various cancers[3]. Antisense RNAs like MICAL2-AS1 can influence gene expression at levels including transcription, mRNA stability, and translation, often acting in cis (on the same chromosome) or trans (on different chromosomes)[3]. Their primary mechanism includes forming RNA:RNA duplexes, influencing chromatin structure, epigenetic modifications, or interfering with transcriptional machinery. While the detailed functions and disease relevance of MICAL2-AS1 are still emerging, it may play regulatory roles in cancer by controlling MICAL2 expression, and it could serve as a potential biomarker in research contexts. There are currently no drugs targeting MICAL2-AS1 directly, and it is not considered a classical drug target such as a receptor or enzyme.
