Overview

Microbial activity refers to the collective biological and biochemical processes carried out by microorganisms—including bacteria, archaea, fungi, protists, and viruses—in a given environment. These activities encompass decomposition of organic matter into simpler substances; nutrient cycling such as nitrogen fixation and mineralization; formation and stabilization of soil structure through secreted compounds that bind particles together; promotion of plant growth via symbiotic relationships with roots; suppression of plant pathogens through competition or production of antimicrobial compounds; regulation of greenhouse gases via carbon sequestration or release. Microbial activity is essential for ecosystem functioning—affecting soil fertility in agriculture as well as human health through the gut microbiome—but it is not itself a discrete molecular target suitable for drug development. Rather than being a single molecule or receptor that can be targeted therapeutically with drugs, it describes an aggregate property resulting from many different organisms acting together under environmental influences such as temperature, moisture availability, pH levels, nutrient supply, and oxygen concentration[1][2][3][6].
