Overview

Microbial and host tissue proteins represent a broad, non-specific collective target for various antiseptic and disinfectant agents rather than a single molecular entity. These agents, such as povidone-iodine and silver-based compounds, exert their therapeutic effects by chemically modifying functional groups across a wide array of proteins in both pathogens and host cells (McDonnell & Russell, 1999). In microorganisms, this leads to the rapid destruction of cell membranes, inactivation of essential metabolic enzymes, and disruption of structural proteins, resulting in broad-spectrum microbicidal activity (StatPearls, 2023). However, because the mechanism is non-selective, these agents can also affect host tissue proteins, which may lead to localized cytotoxicity or impaired wound healing if used at high concentrations or for prolonged periods (Lansdown, 2006). This collective target is primarily relevant in the context of topical anti-infective therapy, surgical prophylaxis, and wound management, where the goal is to reduce microbial load while maintaining a therapeutic window that spares host tissue function (PubMed, 2010).
