The microbial biofilm matrix is a complex, self-produced extracellular structure that encases microbial cells within a biofilm. It serves as both the scaffold and protective barrier for the community of microorganisms, facilitating adhesion to surfaces, cohesion among cells, nutrient cycling, and defense against environmental threats such as antibiotics and host immune responses. The matrix is primarily composed of water, polysaccharides, proteins, extracellular DNA (eDNA), lipids, and other biopolymers.
