A microbial cell refers to an individual organism of microscopic size, which may exist in its single-celled form or as a colony of cells. This broad category includes bacteria, archaea, fungi, and various protists, many of which play critical roles in human health as part of the commensal microbiome or as pathogenic agents of infectious disease (NIH, 2023). In pharmacology, the microbial cell is not a single molecular target but rather a biological entity containing numerous specific targets, such as the peptidoglycan cell wall in bacteria or the ergosterol-containing membrane in fungi (StatPearls, 2023). Antimicrobial drugs are designed to exploit the biochemical and structural differences between microbial cells and human host cells to achieve selective toxicity, thereby inhibiting growth or causing cell death. However, the evolutionary pressure exerted by these drugs has led to the widespread emergence of antimicrobial resistance, a major global health threat that reduces the efficacy of standard treatments (WHO, 2021). Understanding the complex biology of the microbial cell is essential for developing new therapeutic strategies and managing infectious diseases effectively.
