The microbial cell membrane is a dynamic, semi-permeable barrier composed of a phospholipid bilayer interspersed with various proteins. These membrane proteins are essential for numerous cellular processes, including transport, signaling, energy transduction, and maintaining structural integrity. Silver ions (Ag+) exert antimicrobial effects by targeting these membranes and associated proteins through mechanisms such as disruption of membrane integrity, protein interaction (binding to thiol groups), and generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), leading to loss of barrier function, enzyme inhibition, and metabolic arrest.
