Microbial cell membranes and cellular macromolecules represent a broad category of targets for antimicrobial agents, including antibiotics, antifungals, and disinfectants. The microbial cell membrane is a phospholipid bilayer that maintains osmotic balance and houses essential metabolic enzymes, while cellular macromolecules such as DNA, RNA, and proteins are vital for replication and cellular function (StatPearls, 2023). Many biocides and certain systemic drugs, such as daptomycin or polymyxins, act by physically disrupting the membrane or causing the leakage of intracellular contents (PubMed, PMC7064014). Non-specific agents like alcohols and oxidizing agents target a wide array of these macromolecules simultaneously, leading to rapid microbial death through protein denaturation and lipid peroxidation (CDC, Guideline for Disinfection and Sterilization). While highly effective for sterilization and topical antisepsis, the lack of high specificity for microbial versus host structures can limit the systemic use of agents targeting these broad categories due to potential toxicity.
