Overview

Microbial cell membranes and lens surface deposits represent the primary sites of action for ophthalmic contact lens care products rather than a single molecular target. Microbial cell membranes, specifically the phospholipid bilayers of bacteria (e.g., Pseudomonas aeruginosa), fungi, and protozoa (e.g., Acanthamoeba), are targeted by biocides to prevent serious ocular infections. Lens surface deposits are complex accumulations of host-derived tear components, including proteins like lysozyme and lactoferrin, as well as lipids and mucins, which adhere to the lens material during wear. These deposits can harbor pathogens, reduce visual clarity, and trigger inflammatory conditions like giant papillary conjunctivitis. Therapeutic agents, primarily biocides and surfactants found in multipurpose solutions, work by disrupting the integrity of microbial membranes and chemically or mechanically removing surface debris to maintain ocular health and lens biocompatibility.
