"Microbial cells – non-specific cellular components" is a pharmacological classification representing the collective structural and functional elements of a microorganism—such as the cell wall, plasma membrane, and cytoplasmic proteins—that serve as the site of action for non-selective antimicrobial agents (DrugBank, 2024). Unlike targeted therapies that inhibit specific enzymes, agents acting on these components typically exert their effects through broad chemical or physical damage, including the denaturation of proteins, dissolution of lipid membranes, or oxidative stress (StatPearls, 2023). This mode of action is characteristic of antiseptics and disinfectants like alcohols, iodine, and hydrogen peroxide, which provide rapid, broad-spectrum activity against bacteria, fungi, and viruses (CDC, 2008). Because these targets are common to many biological systems, these agents are generally restricted to topical or environmental applications to avoid host cell toxicity. Their primary clinical role is in the reduction of microbial burden on skin or surfaces to prevent the transmission of infectious diseases.
