Overview

Microbial community diversity refers to the variety and abundance of different microorganisms—such as bacteria, archaea, fungi, and protists—within a specific environment or habitat. It is typically measured using indices that capture both species richness (the number of distinct taxa) and evenness (the relative abundance of those taxa). This concept is central in microbial ecology because diverse communities are often more resilient to environmental disturbances and better able to maintain essential ecosystem functions such as nutrient cycling, organic matter decomposition, soil health support, and biogeochemical processes. High microbial community diversity has been shown to stabilize multiple ecosystem functions simultaneously by enabling asynchronous temporal dynamics among different microbes; this means that various microbes can compensate for each other’s functional roles over time. The study of microbial community diversity employs molecular techniques like 16S rRNA gene sequencing for bacteria/archaea or ITS sequencing for fungi. While not a single molecule or receptor—and thus not a direct therapeutic target—the concept is crucial in understanding how changes in the microbiome affect both environmental health and human disease states through indirect mechanisms such as dysbiosis or loss of beneficial functions.
