Overview

Microbial community modulation refers to strategies that intentionally and strategically alter the composition and function of microbial populations in a given environment, with particular focus on human health interventions in the gut microbiome. These approaches range from dietary modifications and supplementation with specific probiotic organisms to advanced interventions like antibiotics, fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), and even phage therapy. The rationale is that a balanced and diverse microbial community is essential for healthy immune function, nutrient metabolism, and protection against infection, whereas dysbiosis (imbalance) is associated with numerous diseases. Although promising, microbial community modulation is not a classical therapeutic target such as a receptor or enzyme but a broad, mechanistic intervention. It presents unique challenges, including safety, efficacy, and individualized responses, and requires ongoing research, standardization, and monitoring for clinical application.
