Microbial components – non-specific refers to a broad category of biological molecules derived from bacteria, viruses, or fungi that act as therapeutic agents or targets, primarily by modulating the host immune system (ChEMBL, 2024). These components include pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) such as lipopolysaccharides, peptidoglycans, and microbial nucleic acids (Nature Reviews Immunology, 2020). Rather than interacting with a single specific receptor, these substances often engage multiple pattern recognition receptors (PRRs), including Toll-like receptors (TLRs) and NOD-like receptors (NLRs), to trigger an innate immune response (StatPearls, 2023). In clinical practice, non-specific microbial components are utilized in vaccines as adjuvants to enhance immunogenicity or as standalone immunomodulators to prevent recurrent respiratory infections or treat certain cancers, such as bladder cancer (e.g., BCG therapy) (National Cancer Institute, 2023). Because this designation encompasses a heterogeneous group of molecules, it is considered a descriptive category in pharmacological databases rather than a distinct molecular entity (PubChem, 2024).
