Overview

Microbial electron transport chain (ETC) proteins are a diverse group of membrane-bound and soluble proteins that facilitate the transfer of electrons from electron donors to terminal electron acceptors through a series of redox reactions. This process is central to microbial energy conservation, enabling the generation of an electrochemical gradient across cellular membranes, which is then used for ATP synthesis. Key components include dehydrogenases, quinones, cytochromes, and terminal oxidases/reductases. They mediate sequential redox reactions for energy conservation and enable survival in diverse habitats by allowing utilization of different energy sources and terminal acceptors. Some microbes, like Geobacter, utilize specialized proteins for extracellular electron transfer, facilitating processes like metal reduction. Targeting these proteins can disrupt microbial metabolism, but careful consideration is needed to avoid off-target effects and resistance development.
