Target intelligence / Profile preview
Microbial lipid membranes are essential structural components of bacteria and fungi that maintain cellular integrity and regulate the transport of nutrients and waste (PubMed: 27006251). These membranes serve as critical therapeutic targets because their composition, such as the presence of ergosterol in fungi or specific anionic phospholipids in bacteria, differs significantly from human cell membranes, allowing for selective toxicity (StatPearls: NBK549785). Drugs like polymyxins and daptomycin exert their antimicrobial effects by binding to these lipids, causing membrane depolarization or physical disruption that leads to cell lysis (NIH: PMC4520915). Particulate matter, however, is an environmental pollutant consisting of microscopic solids or liquid droplets that can cause systemic inflammation and respiratory distress upon inhalation (EPA: Particulate Matter Basics). While microbial membranes are established drug targets for treating infections, particulate matter is primarily a causative agent of disease rather than a site for therapeutic intervention. Together, these entities represent physical and structural interfaces that play critical roles in infection and environmental pathology.
Direct disruption of the lipid bilayer, formation of transmembrane pores, and dissipation of the membrane potential.
