Overview

Microbial membrane components of oral bacteria and Candida species represent a broad class of structural and functional molecules essential for the survival and pathogenicity of the oral microbiota. In bacteria such as Porphyromonas gingivalis and Streptococcus mutans, these include peptidoglycan, lipopolysaccharides (LPS), and various membrane-bound proteins that facilitate adhesion and biofilm formation (NIH, 2023). In fungal species like Candida albicans, the membrane is characterized by the presence of ergosterol, which maintains fluidity and integrity, and cell wall components like beta-glucans and chitin (Journal of Fungi, 2021). These components are critical targets for antimicrobial agents; for instance, chlorhexidine acts by non-specifically disrupting bacterial cell membranes, while polyene antifungals like nystatin and amphotericin B bind specifically to ergosterol to create lethal pores (StatPearls, 2023). Targeting these structures is vital in treating oral infections such as periodontitis, dental caries, and oral candidiasis, although challenges include the potential for oral dysbiosis and the development of antimicrobial resistance (Frontiers in Microbiology, 2022). Furthermore, these membrane components often act as pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) that trigger host immune responses through Toll-like receptors (PubMed, 2020). The integrity of these membranes is also a target for various antiseptic mouthwashes containing cetylpyridinium chloride or essential oils (Cochrane, 2017). Understanding the specific composition of these membranes allows for the development of more targeted therapies that minimize damage to the host healthy tissues.
