Microbial oxidoreductase enzymes are a broad class of proteins produced by microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, and archaea) that catalyze oxidation-reduction reactions, using molecular oxygen or other electron acceptors. Major types include laccases, monooxygenases, dioxygenases, and cytochrome P450s. These enzymes play essential roles in the transformation and degradation of organic molecules, including hydrocarbons, lignin, pollutants, and drugs, thereby impacting the global carbon cycle, environmental health, and microbial metabolism. They are important both as drug targets (in antimicrobial development) and as industrial biocatalysts for processes ranging from bioremediation to biofuel and pharmaceutical synthesis.
