Target intelligence / Profile preview
Microbial pathogens and viral particles are biological entities, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa, that can cause infectious diseases in humans and other hosts (NIH, 2023). These agents function by invading host tissues, utilizing host resources for replication, and often producing toxins or triggering harmful immune responses (StatPearls, 2023). In the context of pharmacology, these are not single molecular targets but rather complex organisms or particles containing numerous potential drug targets such as enzymes, structural proteins, and nucleic acids (Nature Reviews Drug Discovery, 2013). Drugs interacting with these entities include antibiotics, antivirals, and antifungals, which work through diverse mechanisms like inhibiting cell wall synthesis or blocking viral entry (WHO, 2021). The primary therapeutic challenge associated with these pathogens is the emergence of antimicrobial resistance, which renders existing treatments ineffective and necessitates the continuous development of new therapeutic strategies (CDC, 2022). Furthermore, targeting these agents often requires balancing efficacy against the pathogen with the preservation of the host's beneficial commensal microbiota (Nature, 2018). Modern approaches also include the use of vaccines to prime the immune system to recognize and neutralize these particles before an infection becomes established (Mayo Clinic, 2023).
