Overview

Microbial protein and membrane macromolecules refers to the broad set of essential components within bacteria, viruses, and fungi that are targeted by non-selective antimicrobial agents (StatPearls, NBK507811). These targets include structural proteins, metabolic enzymes, and lipid bilayers or cell wall components necessary for microbial viability and replication (CDC, Guideline for Disinfection and Sterilization). Drugs and chemical agents targeting these macromolecules typically act through physical or chemical disruption, such as the denaturation of proteins or the dissolution of lipid membranes (PubChem, CID 702). This non-specific mechanism of action is characteristic of antiseptics and disinfectants, such as ethanol, chlorhexidine, and povidone-iodine, which are used to reduce microbial load on surfaces or skin to prevent infection (NIH, National Library of Medicine). Because these targets are fundamental to microbial life and often highly conserved or structurally diverse, agents hitting them usually possess a very broad spectrum of activity against various pathogens. However, due to their non-selective nature, these agents can also cause damage to host tissues, limiting their use primarily to topical or environmental applications.
