The microbial respiratory enzyme system is a collection of enzymes and protein complexes in microorganisms that facilitate cellular respiration. It transfers electrons from metabolic substrates to terminal electron acceptors, generating a proton gradient across the membrane and producing ATP through oxidative phosphorylation.
