Overview

Microcirculation and thrombus formation pathways encompass the complex physiological processes governing blood flow in small vessels and the biochemical cascade leading to blood clot formation. Thrombus formation, or thrombosis, is a multi-step process involving platelet activation, adhesion, and the coagulation cascade, which culminates in the conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin (NIH, 2023). While essential for preventing blood loss after injury (hemostasis), dysregulation of these pathways can lead to pathological conditions such as deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, or arterial occlusion. Pharmacological intervention typically targets specific components within these pathways, such as clotting factors or platelet receptors, to prevent or treat thromboembolic events (PubMed, 2022). Because this term describes a broad set of biological processes rather than a single protein or receptor, it is classified as a pathway rather than a discrete therapeutic target.
