Microcystis aeruginosa is a ubiquitous species of freshwater cyanobacteria recognized for its ability to form harmful algal blooms (HABs) in nutrient-rich aquatic environments. While categorized as a target in environmental toxicology and databases like ChEMBL, it is a complex prokaryotic organism rather than a discrete therapeutic molecule or receptor. The primary clinical significance of M. aeruginosa lies in its production of microcystins, which are potent cyclic heptapeptide hepatotoxins that inhibit eukaryotic protein phosphatases 1 and 2A. Human exposure to these toxins via contaminated water can lead to acute liver failure, gastrointestinal distress, and chronic health issues, including potential oncogenesis. Environmental control agents, such as hydrogen peroxide and copper-based algaecides, interact with the organism by inducing oxidative stress or disrupting photosynthetic pathways to mitigate bloom formation.
