Target intelligence / Profile preview
The term Microenvironment via secreted trophic and immunomodulatory factors refers to the complex extracellular milieu composed of signaling molecules—such as cytokines, chemokines, and growth factors—that dictate the behavior of surrounding cells (Whiteside, 2008). This secretome plays a critical role in both physiological processes like tissue repair and pathological states like cancer progression or chronic inflammation (Gnecchi et al., 2016). In regenerative medicine, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are frequently studied for their ability to modulate this environment to favor healing and suppress harmful immune responses (Kyurkchiev et al., 2014). Conversely, in oncology, the tumor microenvironment (TME) often utilizes these secreted factors to promote angiogenesis and facilitate immune evasion (Pitt et al., 2016). Therapeutic strategies targeting this environment aim to either neutralize inhibitory factors or supplement beneficial trophic signals to restore tissue homeostasis. Because this represents a collective system of interactions rather than a single molecular entity, it is considered a therapeutic strategy or biological niche rather than a discrete drug target.
Modulation of the local cellular environment through the secretion of bioactive molecules that regulate immune cell recruitment, activation, and tissue repair processes.
