Overview

Microfibril-associated glycoprotein 3 (MFAP3) is a protein encoded by the MFAP3 gene, which forms part of the extracellular matrix and is associated with elastin-containing microfibrils[3][4]. It contains a single immunoglobulin-like (Ig-like) C2 domain[1][3]. MFAP3 is considered a structural protein contributing to microfibril assembly, elastin fiber formation, and maintenance of tissue homeostasis in connective tissues[1][2][3]. MFAP3 is more ubiquitously expressed than some other family members, suggesting broader functional roles across tissues[2][4]. While microfibrillar-associated proteins as a family are implicated in skeletal, metabolic, and potentially cancer-related disorders, MFAP3 has not been specifically identified as a direct therapeutic target or as interacting with any approved drugs[2][4]. One of its important paralogs is MFAP3L[1][3].
