Overview

Microglial activation refers to the process by which microglia, the resident immune cells of the central nervous system (CNS), transition from a surveillant or "resting" state to various reactive states in response to changes in their environment. This process is central to neuroinflammation and is implicated in both protective and pathological responses within the CNS. Activated microglia display a spectrum of phenotypes, including pro-inflammatory (M1) and anti-inflammatory (M2) states, and participate in cytokine release, phagocytosis, and antigen presentation. Microglial activation is implicated across numerous CNS pathologies and can be either beneficial or detrimental depending on context.
