Microglial activation pathways refer to the molecular and cellular mechanisms by which microglia, the resident immune cells of the central nervous system (CNS), detect and respond to various stimuli such as pathogens, injury, or disease-associated signals. Upon activation, microglia undergo phenotypic changes and initiate signaling cascades that can result in either pro-inflammatory (M1) or anti-inflammatory (M2) responses. Dysregulated or chronic microglial activation contributes significantly to neuroinflammatory conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, and may exacerbate neuronal damage through excessive production of inflammatory mediators or impaired clearance functions.
