Overview

microRNA-100 (miR-100) is a highly conserved, small non-coding RNA that serves as a pivotal post-transcriptional regulator of gene expression. It belongs to the miR-99 family and functions by binding to the 3' untranslated regions (UTRs) of target messenger RNAs, thereby inducing translational repression or mRNA degradation (NCBI). miR-100 is integral to the regulation of various biological processes, including cell proliferation, apoptosis, and differentiation, by targeting key signaling pathways such as the PI3K/Akt/mTOR axis and Polo-like kinase 1 (PLK1) (PubMed). In many human malignancies, miR-100 acts as a tumor suppressor, and its downregulation is associated with advanced disease stages and poor prognosis in cancers like breast, lung, and prostate cancer (NIH). Conversely, it may exhibit oncogenic roles in specific contexts, such as certain types of renal cell carcinoma. Therapeutic development focuses on miR-100 mimics to restore its suppressive function or antagomirs to inhibit its activity, though clinical translation is currently limited by delivery hurdles and the risk of off-target effects (Nature).
