MicroRNA-1178 (miR-1178) is a small non-coding RNA of approximately 22 nucleotides, processed from the MIR1178 gene in humans. It functions in post-transcriptional regulation by binding to the 3' untranslated regions of target mRNAs, leading to decreased protein production. In hepatocellular carcinoma, miR-1178-3p is downregulated and acts as a tumor suppressor by targeting genes such as TBL1XR1, with subsequent effects on oncogenic pathways including PI3K/AKT. The restoration of miR-1178-3p suppresses cell proliferation, migration, tumor growth, and angiogenesis in cell and animal models, highlighting its potential as a therapeutic target. However, no approved drugs currently target miR-1178, and clinical translation faces the general challenges of miRNA therapy, such as specificity and delivery.
miRNA mimics: Synthetic molecules that restore or augment miR-1178 function may suppress target gene expression—e.g., lowering tumorigenic pathway activation. miRNA inhibitors: Synthetic antagonists could, in other contexts, block miR-1178 effects if it acts oncogenically (not described for miR-1178, but general concept).
