Overview

microRNA 1180 (miR-1180) is a small, non-coding RNA molecule (~20-24 nucleotides) transcribed from the human genome (chromosome 17p11.2) that functions in the post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression by binding to complementary sequences on target mRNAs, leading to their silencing. miR-1180 plays diverse roles in cancer biology: in some cancers (such as colorectal and bladder cancer) it acts as a tumor suppressor by inhibiting cell proliferation and migration and promoting apoptosis, while in others (such as hepatocellular carcinoma, ovarian, and lung cancer) its upregulation is associated with tumor progression and poor prognosis. It targets multiple genes implicated in key pathways (such as COL12A1 in colorectal cancer, SFRP1/Wnt in ovarian cancer, and regulators in MAPK and PI3K/AKT signaling). Clinically, miR-1180 is under investigation as a non-invasive biomarker for diagnosis, prognosis, and patient stratification in several cancers, but no approved drugs currently target miR-1180 or utilize it as a direct companion biomarker. Its context-dependent function underscores the need for tumor- and disease-specific evaluation before development as a therapeutic target[1][2].
