Overview

microRNA 1181 (miR-1181) is a human microRNA gene involved in the regulation of cell proliferation, migration, and invasion, primarily documented in cancer types such as non-small cell lung cancer and pancreatic cancer[1][2]. In non-small cell lung cancer, miR-1181 is upregulated and promotes tumor cell proliferation and metastasis, partly by directly targeting the tumor suppressor AXIN1[1]. Conversely, in pancreatic cancer, miR-1181 is downregulated and its overexpression inhibits tumor cell proliferation, migration, and invasion by directly targeting and repressing STAT3—a key oncogenic transcription factor—implicating miR-1181 as a tumor suppressor in this context[2]. miR-1181 also interacts with regulators of stemness (SOX2, STAT3) and is implicated in mesenchymal-epithelial transition dynamics, which affect cancer cell invasion and metastasis[1][2]. There are currently no clinically approved drugs specifically targeting miR-1181; however, its expression levels are being investigated as potential prognostic biomarkers in several cancer types[1][2].
