Overview

MicroRNA 1184-3 (MIR1184-3), also known as hsa-mir-1184-3, is a small, non-coding RNA molecule approximately 20-24 nucleotides in length that regulates gene expression post-transcriptionally by binding to complementary sequences in the 3' untranslated region (3' UTR) of target messenger RNAs (mRNAs)[5]. This interaction usually leads to translational inhibition or mRNA degradation. miR-1184 has been implicated in controlling inflammation—particularly by downregulating interleukin-16 (IL-16)—and its decreased expression is observed in neonatal sepsis, making it a candidate diagnostic biomarker for this disease[2]. In cancer biology, miR-1184 modulates tumor progression via the circCA12/miR-1184/RAS axis in bladder cancer, potentially affecting the expression of oncogenic RAS family genes[3]. Because microRNAs such as MIR1184-3 do not encode proteins or function as receptors or enzymes, they are not considered conventional drug targets, though their modulation offers potential therapeutic strategies in the future.
