MicroRNA 1208 (miR-1208)

Target
miR-1208
Molecular classification
MicroRNA, Non-coding RNA
01

Overview

MicroRNA 1208 is a short (20-24 nucleotide) non-coding RNA of the miRNA class, involved in the regulation of gene expression through post-transcriptional targeting of mRNAs, leading to inhibition of translation or mRNA destabilization[3]. It is processed from a stem-loop precursor in the nucleus and incorporated into the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC) in the cytoplasm for gene silencing. MiR-1208 is encoded on chromosome 8q24, a region frequently altered in solid tumors[1], and is suggested to function mainly as a tumor suppressor by repressing targets such as TBCK, thereby inducing apoptosis and increasing sensitivity to certain anticancer drugs such as cisplatin and TRAIL[1]. Though it acts as a tumor suppressor in some cancers, its expression pattern and precise function can vary by tissue and tumor type[1][3]. MiR-1208 is under investigation as a therapeutic target and a biomarker for drug sensitivity in cancer treatment[1][3].
