Overview

MicroRNA 1227 (miR-1227) is a short, non-coding RNA molecule (20–24 nucleotides) involved in post-transcriptional gene regulation. It is transcribed as part of a longer primary miRNA transcript, processed to form a mature miRNA that is incorporated into the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), where it guides the complex to target mRNAs based on sequence complementarity, leading to translational repression or degradation of the target mRNAs. miR-1227 has been implicated in multiple cellular processes, including regulation of cell proliferation, apoptosis, and survival. It is downregulated in fetal growth restriction (FGR) and may modulate biological pathways such as insulin signaling, JAK-STAT, MAPK, and cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction by targeting specific genes including PRKAB2, AKT1, PIK3R3, and MKNK1. miR-1227 has also been associated with tumorigenesis and cancer, indicating possible roles in oncogenic or tumor-suppressive functions depending on context. It is being studied as a potential biomarker and therapeutic target for certain diseases, particularly FGR.
