Overview

MicroRNA 1231 (miR-1231) is a small, non-coding RNA molecule that regulates gene expression by binding to the 3′ untranslated regions of target mRNAs, leading to mRNA degradation or inhibition of translation. In human glioma, miR-1231 acts as a potent tumor suppressor, inhibiting cell proliferation and promoting cell cycle arrest by directly targeting epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and suppressing the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling cascade. Its dysregulated expression is linked to cancer progression and stage, making it a promising candidate for diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. Beyond oncology, miR-1231 also regulates lipid metabolism by inhibiting lipoprotein lipase (LPL) expression, and may play a role in other diseases such as liver disorders and viral infections. The molecule is studied primarily in experimental and preclinical contexts, with therapeutic interest centered on miR-1231 mimics or inhibitors, but it is not yet addressed by approved pharmaceutical agents.
