MicroRNA 1236 (miR-1236) is a short (20-24 nucleotide) non-coding RNA molecule belonging to the microRNA (miRNA) family[1]. It regulates gene expression primarily through *post-transcriptional mechanisms*: miR-1236 is produced from primary transcripts by RNA polymerase II, processed in the nucleus and cytoplasm, and incorporated into the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), where it binds to partially complementary messenger RNAs, resulting in their translational repression or degradation[1][3]. miR-1236-3p, a mature strand of MIR1236, has been shown to function as a *tumor suppressor*, especially in colon, breast, and lung cancers, by inhibiting cell proliferation, invasion, migration, and epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT)[2]. It exerts its effects through direct targeting of protein-coding genes such as DCLK3 (doublecortin like kinase 3)[2]. Lower expression of miR-1236-3p has been correlated with advanced tumor stages and poor prognosis (e.g., in colon cancer)[2]. It is currently considered a *promising therapeutic target* and *prognostic biomarker* in several cancer types, but no specific clinically approved drugs targeting miR-1236 exist as of this writing[2].
