Target intelligence / Profile preview
MicroRNA 124-2 (miR-124-2) is one of three highly conserved human genes encoding microRNA-124, a small (~21-24 nucleotide) non-coding RNA crucial for post-transcriptional gene regulation. It is abundantly expressed in the brain, immune system, and other tissues, where it modulates numerous biological processes including neuronal differentiation, immune cell polarization, cell proliferation, migration, apoptosis, and inflammation[2][5][6][7][1]. miR-124-2 operates by binding to complementary sequences on target mRNAs via the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), leading to inhibition of protein translation or mRNA degradation[7][1]. Dysregulation of miR-124-2 has been implicated in the development and progression of various cancers and immune or neurological disorders, making it a promising therapeutic target and biomarker for disease monitoring[5][3][1].
Gene silencing via RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC): miR-124-2 binds to target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing, typically at the 3′-untranslated regions, resulting in mRNA degradation or inhibition of translation[1][7]; Regulation of cell cycle progression, metastasis, differentiation, and apoptosis by targeting specific mRNAs such as CDK6, PTBP1, STAT3, SOCS5, PDCD6, EPH receptor A2, etc.[2][5][3]
