MicroRNA 1245a (MIR1245A)

Target
MIR1245A
Molecular classification
MicroRNA, Non-coding RNA, Regulatory RNA

Overview

MicroRNA 1245a (MIR1245A) is a small, non-coding RNA molecule, part of the regulatory microRNA family. It specifically functions by binding to complementary sequences in the 3' untranslated regions (UTRs) of target messenger RNAs, leading to their degradation or inhibiting their translation. MIR1245A is upregulated in colon adenocarcinoma and promotes malignant behaviors such as cellular proliferation and invasion by targeting tumor suppressor genes including BRCA2. Its modulation is associated with poor prognosis in certain cancers, suggesting its utility as a biomarker and a potential therapeutic target. Chemically modified antisense oligonucleotides that inhibit MIR1245A have been developed for research and possible clinical use. As with other miRNAs, broad involvement in gene regulatory networks creates substantial therapeutic challenges, particularly regarding specificity and potential side effects.
