Overview

MicroRNA 1249 (miR-1249) is a small, non-coding RNA of approximately 22 nucleotides, transcribed as part of a longer primary transcript and processed through the canonical microRNA biogenesis pathway. It regulates gene expression post-transcriptionally by targeting specific mRNAs for degradation or translational inhibition. miR-1249 is upregulated in glioma, small cell carcinoma of the esophagus, and metastatic papillary thyroid carcinoma, where it promotes cell proliferation, notably by targeting the tumor suppressor gene APC2 and activating the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway. The expression and biological role of miR-1249 are highly tumor-type dependent, with reported tumor-suppressive or oncogenic functions in different contexts. miR-1249 is considered both a potential therapeutic target (through antisense inhibition) and diagnostic biomarker in oncology[1][2]. **Note:** There are no approved drugs that directly target miR-1249 as of this writing, but antisense approaches or small molecule modulators are under investigation in the broader field of miRNA-directed therapeutics[1][2].
