Overview

MicroRNA 125b-2 (MIR125B2) is a member of the highly conserved miR-125 family of small non-coding RNAs that play major roles in the regulation of gene expression at the post-transcriptional level[1][4]. MIR125B2 is located on human chromosome 21q21 and generates a mature microRNA (miR-125b) that is functionally indistinguishable from its paralog miR-125b-1 (on chromosome 11q23)[1][2]. MiR-125b-2 modulates diverse cellular processes including cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and immune responses by directly targeting mRNAs that encode transcription factors, anti- or pro-apoptotic proteins, growth factors, and matrix metalloproteases[1][3][4]. Dysregulation of miR-125b-2 expression is associated with multiple diseases, notably various carcinomas (with roles as both tumor suppressor and oncogene depending on context), inflammatory diseases, neurological disorders, and other conditions[1][3][5]. MiR-125b expression profiles can serve as prognostic and diagnostic biomarkers, especially in cancer, and its regulatory effects make it a potential therapeutic target, although broad functional effects and context dependence are challenges for therapeutic manipulation[1][2][3][4].
