Overview

MicroRNA 1271 (miR-1271) is a short, non-coding RNA molecule that post-transcriptionally regulates gene expression by binding to the 3' untranslated regions of target messenger RNAs, leading to their degradation or inhibition of translation[2][5]. It has established roles in the regulation of cell proliferation, apoptosis, and differentiation in multiple tissues. miR-1271 acts as a tumor suppressor in several cancer types by inhibiting oncogenic pathways, but can also be dysregulated and contribute to disease progression[2][4]. In musculoskeletal biology, elevated miR-1271-5p is associated with delayed healing of bone fractures, serving as a candidate biomarker for impaired bone repair and a potential therapeutic target in bone disorders[3]. Its activity is context-dependent and can influence various pathways depending on cellular and disease context, such as targeting lactate dehydrogenase A in endometrial cancer or FOXK2 in hepatocellular carcinoma[3][4]. As with other microRNAs, the pleiotropic action of miR-1271 poses both therapeutic promise and challenges for clinical application.
