Overview

MicroRNA 1278 (miR-1278) is a short, non-coding RNA molecule of the microRNA family that participates in the post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression[1][6]. Like other miRNAs, miR-1278 typically binds to target messenger RNAs (mRNAs) and promotes their degradation or inhibits their translation, thereby influencing numerous biological processes[1][6]. In cancer biology, miR-1278 has been shown to suppress the expression of specific genes (such as fibronectin 1, FN1) and its activity can be modulated by circular RNAs (e.g., hsa_circ_0000285)[5]. The biological roles and disease associations of miR-1278 are still being elucidated, but it is involved in cell proliferation, invasion, and apoptosis in various cancers. At present, miR-1278 is not itself a direct therapeutic target (e.g., a receptor, enzyme, or channel), but serves as a post-transcriptional gene regulator and may be relevant as a potential biomarker or node for RNA-based therapeutics[5].

Mechanism of action

As a miRNA, miR-1278 binds to complementary sequences in target mRNAs (notably, the 3′ untranslated region) to induce mRNA degradation or inhibit translation[1][6]. It is also "sponged" by certain circular RNAs (e.g., hsa_circ_0000285), which can indirectly regulate its activity by sequestering it away from its normal targets[5].
