Overview

MicroRNA 1286 (MIR1286) is a short, non-coding RNA gene in humans that encodes a microRNA—a small (20–24 nucleotides) regulatory RNA molecule that modulates gene expression post-transcriptionally. Like other microRNAs, MIR1286 is transcribed as part of a longer primary transcript, processed by Drosha and Dicer enzymes, and incorporated into the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which binds to target mRNAs to inhibit their translation or promote degradation. MIR1286 has been associated with the inhibition of osteogenic differentiation via targeting of FZD4 expression, which may contribute to the progression of osteoporosis. There is currently no evidence that MIR1286 is a therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, transporter, or conventional drug target. Its medical significance is under investigation, and no drugs are known to specifically target MIR1286.

Mechanism of action

microRNAs generally act through incorporation into RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC) to inhibit or degrade target mRNAs, but specific drug mechanisms for MIR1286 have not been described

03

Biological functions

Post-transcriptional regulation of gene expressionRegulation of mRNA stability and translation
04

Disease associations

Potentially implicated in osteoporosis through regulation of osteogenic differentiationAssociated with DiGeorge syndrome (per gene annotation, functional basis unclear)
05

Safety considerations

microRNAs present general challenges for therapeutic targeting, including off-target effects and delivery, but MIR1286-specific issues are not described
