Overview

MicroRNA 1287 (miR-1287; human: hsa-miR-1287) is a small, noncoding RNA approximately 20–25 nucleotides in length that functions through post-transcriptional silencing or degradation of target messenger RNAs by binding to their 3′ untranslated regions. miR-1287 has been implicated in several physiological and disease processes, including regulation of cell proliferation, apoptosis, ferroptosis (a type of iron-dependent cell death), inflammation, and likely acts in tumor suppression in some cancers such as osteosarcoma and lower grade gliomas. It may also play a role in modulating cytokine response in viral infections, such as COVID-19 through regulation of IL6R and other inflammatory mediators. miR-1287 and especially its mature form miR-1287-5p are being researched as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers in various pathologies, as well as experimental targets for RNA-based therapeutics. No conventional small molecule drugs currently modulate miR-1287, but ongoing research explores oligonucleotide-based strategies.

Mechanism of action

Antisense oligonucleotides could inhibit miR-1287 function (miRNA inhibition); miRNA mimics could restore miR-1287 function if downregulated; These approaches may alter expression of downstream target genes or affect pathways like ferroptosis or inflammation.

Biological functions

Regulation of gene expressionPost-transcriptional gene silencingCell proliferation inhibitionModulation of apoptosisRegulation of cell death pathways (including ferroptosis)Modulation of inflammation
04

Disease associations

Cancer (tumorigenesis, tumor suppression, and, in some contexts, oncogenic roles)Nervous system injuries (e.g., spinal cord injury)Potential roles in infection/inflammatory disease (e.g., COVID-19 severity/cytokine storm modulation)Osteosarcoma (linked to tumor progression and cell death by ferroptosis)Lower grade glioma prognosis
05

Safety considerations

Off-target gene regulation: miRNAs regulate multiple genes; therapeutic modulation could have widespread effects.Delivery and stability of miRNA-targeting agents remain challenges.Potential immune activation with miRNA-based therapies.
06

Interacting drugs

None currently approved or well-characterized; therapeutic modulation of miR-1287 might use antisense oligonucleotides or synthetic miRNA mimics, but these are in experimental stages and not standard drugs.
