Overview

MicroRNA-1301 (miR-1301) is a small, non-coding RNA molecule that regulates gene expression by binding to complementary sequences in the 3'-untranslated regions (UTRs) of target messenger RNAs (mRNAs), facilitating their degradation or translational inhibition. Its expression is dysregulated in a variety of human cancers, where it may act as either an oncogene or a tumor suppressor depending on cell type and context. miR-1301 modulates cell proliferation, cell cycle progression, migration, invasion, and apoptotic pathways by targeting multiple oncogenic or tumor suppressive proteins including N-Ras, SFRP1, GSK3β, SIRT1, Thy-1, among others. The abundance of miR-1301 in cancer tissues is associated with clinical parameters and prognosis, and pharmacological modulation of miR-1301 activity alters the effectiveness of certain chemotherapeutic agents.

Mechanism of action

Antagonists/inhibitors of miR-1301: Block its function, restoring expression of downstream tumor-suppressing genes. miR-1301 mimics: Enhance its activity where it acts as a tumor suppressor. Competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) strategies: Sponge or decoy miRNAs to modulate cellular effects. Drug effects on chemosensitivity are through modulation of miR-1301 levels in cancer contexts.

Biological functions

Post-transcriptional gene regulationRNA silencingCell proliferationCell cycle progressionApoptosisCell migrationCell invasionRegulation of oncogenes and tumor suppressorsOther functions depend on tissue and disease context
04

Disease associations

Cancer (many solid tumors: lung, breast, prostate, colorectal, glioma, hepatocellular carcinoma, gastric cancer)Drug resistance (modulates sensitivity to chemotherapy, e.g., cisplatin, epirubicin, imatinib)Other roles in cell differentiation and mineralization in specialized contexts
05

Safety considerations

Off-target effects for miRNA-based therapeutics; miR-1301 interacts with hundreds of potential gene targets, so precise modulation is critical to avoid unwanted gene silencing or activationTumor heterogeneity: miR-1301 function can be oncogenic or tumor-suppressive depending on cancer type and cellular contextPotential for unanticipated effects on cell cycle or apoptosis when targeting broadly expressed miRNAs
